GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 150683
Window focus inconsistency
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
1. With no windows open, Launch an application (for example, gedit). 2. Now launch a 2nd application (for example, gnome-terminal). At this step, it seems to me that gnome-terminal should have focus, but it does not. Neither does gedit. Since I launched these two applications from the gnome-panel, the gnome-panel has focus. 3. Click on the 1st application's window button (in this case gedit) from the window list. At this time, gedit correctly has focus. 4. Click on the 2nd application's window button (in this case gnome-terminal) from the window list. At this time, the gnome-terminal does NOT get the focus, as gedit keeps it. However, the gnome-terminal window does move in front of gedit's window. 5. Then, clicking on the gnome-terminal window correctly gives it focus. I've noticed this since moving to gnome 2.7 from fedora's testing repository. The same issue affects most, if not all, the focus handling tasks and I find myself clicking multiple times on the workspace switcher, etc.
What are the exact versions of Metacity and Libwnck that you are using, and what focus mode do you have enabled (click, sloppy, or mouse)? It sounds like you are experiencing bug 149589 (which has been fixed), but I'd need to know version numbers before looking into this further.
Hi Elijah, I'm using: metacity-2.8.2-1 libwnck-2.7.91-1 my focus mode is set to "click" thanks, scott
Yeah, this is the same as bug 149589, which only appeared in Metacity 2.8.2 (without the fix in bug 120100 that went into that release, the bug you are experiencing would never appear). So, please upgrade to metacity 2.8.3 or apply the patch in 149589 and this bug will go away for you. Thanks for following up. I'm reopening in order to mark as a duplicate.

Perfect! I upgraded to 2.8.3 and the problem is resolved. Thanks for your help, scott
