Description Steven Van Impe 2004-06-30 14:34:04 UTC
I seem to be unable to find an easy option to set this (other than using gconf).
There is a greyed-out "Use default background" in the pop up menu when I
right click somewhere in a folder. When I set a default background image
using gconf or select a background for the folder, the option is no longer
greyed-out, but clicking it resets all folders to a plain white background (and
not the default background image I entered in gconf), and also unchecks the "use
default background" checkbox in gconf.

Shouldn't there be an easy method to set the default background?

Using Gnome 2.6.1 on Arch Linux

I found a solution for that. If you middle drag a background from the background
select window it allows you to select whether to apply to all folders or just
the current one.

you can also set background in the file browser and it will apply as default to
all spatial windows too.

When a backgorund is applied to all windows it becomes the default. If you have
a different background in a spatial window and select use default it will revert
to the bg used by the other windows. Beware, If you select use default twice in
a row it resets all to white!

hope that makes sense,

jamie.

I think middle drag should be mentioned somewhere in the user guide, since it's
not something most people are used to (I don't see it right away in the 2.8 user
guide as well).

According to the doc files in CVS HEAD, there is a 'Use Default Background' menu item now.
Right-drag does the same as middle drag in this context, and should be mentioned perhaps as a tip that you can apply a background to all windows.
Needs someone with access to 2.13 build to write it.

I was wondering how far Bug 324966 addressed this already.

In section "6.2. Changing Backgrounds" it says : "To reset the background of the view pane or side pane to the default background, right-click on the background of the pane, then choose Use Default Background.". Actually, right click on the view pane does not let you reset background, so it should be removed. You can reset backgrounds by dragging "reset" from "backgrounds and emblems", so this is missing.

Section "9.1. Drag-and-Drop in the File Manager" explains changing background with middle drag, should we simply place a link in section "6.2. Changing Backgrounds" to section 9.1 ?

Also missing is "set background for all folders" with middle drag for the sidepane (nb and only the side pane). I would add that to section "9.1. Drag-and-Drop in the File Manager", saying available options depend on where you drag to.

I'm afraid I don't see what you mean when you say “Right-drag does the same as middle drag in this context”, could you explain, sorry J. ?
I will submit a patch to fix this later, I think perhaps there were problems upon applying the last patch, for gosnautilus.xml, to CVS that need addressing before submitting a new patch.

Love, Karderio

Dragging from "Backgrounds and emblems" with either middle or right button gives you the choice to set the background for all folders.
Comment 6 Karderio 2006-02-09 22:53:12 UTC
I didn't notice that, it should have been in the docs ;-)

I shall add this too for the next patch.

Karderio, is this in the patch from bug 324966 that got committed? In other words, can we close this bug ;-)
Comment 8 Karderio 2006-02-14 11:57:44 UTC
Nope, not yet
Comment 9 Shaun McCance 2009-02-14 18:52:56 UTC
Reworked the section on background patterns and emblems. It now mentions how to set a background for all folders and the correct way to reset a background.
