GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 144288
Allow adding a topic from Add Bookmark dialog?
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
When I add a new bookmark, often I find there's no suitable topic (well, at the moment I have no topics at all). It might be nice if the topic list had "new topic" as one of the items in the list, or something along those lines, as creating a new topic could frequently be part of adding a bookmark. There may be better solutions. I see the basic problem as I never add any topics, since I only edit bookmarks when I create one, I never open "edit bookmarks"
Dave once proposed to have a a Bookmarks->Add Topic item instead. I think he had in mind a different model though: users would add bookmarks first and then reorganize them later with the editor. For the use case you are describing the convenience of having the boomark directly in the dialog seem important. I think it make sense to add the feature because 1 the "add now, reorganize later" model cannot work for everyone (a large part of users hardly reorganize files for example) 2 current interface, with the list of topics visible by default in the bookmarks add dialog, definately suggest a "organize while adding" model. I see two alternatives for the user interface: 1 "New topic" topic in the list. When selected it goes in editable mode. It's actually added to the list of topics only if still selected when closing the dialog (because it could easily be clicked by mistake and because we dont want to require to open the bookmarks editor to undo). 2 "New Topic..." button that behaves like the "Add folder" button in the file picker. We would have 4 buttons in the dialog at that point though (Help, New Topic, Cancel, Ok) clarkbw do you have an opinion ?
I think the add bookmarks first, then reorganize them later is asking a little much from our users. I would guess the average user is willing to put in just a little time to organize their bookmarks as they add them, however very few are willing to go back through them later and re-organize. Plus there are issues of re-organization where all the contextual information (like the current task the person is doing or the content of the web page) related to the bookmark being added are gone. Without that a person might have to return to the pages bookmarked to try and recover the contextual information. I would tend towards alternative number 2, I think it will be more obvious for new users adding a bookmark and won't clutter the dialog too much. What you've proposed for 2 is exactly what I was thinking. As part of this I'd also like to make sure the whole system of adding a bookmark completely keyboard accessible (doesn't require mouse and keyboard, but can be accomplished via soley one or the other). Mouse nav is pretty much inherant, and most of the keyboard nav is already there. Ctrl-D for bookmarking a page - Dialog - Alt-T changes title of bookmark Alt-N might be a new topic User enters topic name Enter confirms New topic is already selected in dialog Alt-P selects alternative topics Is a type search feature available here for the topics? Enter Confirms addition of new bookmark
This is a dupe of 110640. (yay for havoc, ask me for the 5$ later) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 110640 ***
I verified key nav stuff and added type search. Thanks Bryan.
