Start clock applet, wait a while, and sometimes the time will be clipped on the
right side (i.e. text is too large for the window, see the attached screenshot)

It looks like this happens when using a proportional font and when the clock is
being initialized when the string is relatively short (e.g. Jan 1, 11:11).  When
the time changes to characters with a larger width (like 22:22), the text area
become larger, but the applet width does not increase.

Re-initializing the applet (for example by disabling and reenabling the
displaying of the date), fixes the problem.
