GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 142635
Have a generic URL desktop object
Last modified: 2018-01-02 18:48:20 UTC
I noticed that when I enter an http address in the 'connect to server' dialog, a network volume icon is created on my desktop that opens the URL in Epiphany when activated. However when I drag a link from Epiphany to the desktop, a different kind of URL object is created on the desktop, that behaves exactly the same way as the first one. (See screenshot) It would be very nice to have a generic URL object in Nautilus to prevent inconsistencies like these. Representing a webpage as a network volume feels especially strange to me.
Created attachment 27764 [details] properties pages of both URL objects in Nautilus Sorry for the distorted aspect ratio, guess I pressed a wrong button somewhere :)
Still valid for 2.8.x...
the first case should not open your web-browser but be used to brower a webdav share with nautilys by example. What URL do you use?
Just using http://www.gnome.org/ exhibits this behaviour. In the 2.10 Connect to Server dialogue you have to choose 'Custom location' to reproduce this bug.
Still valid in 2.11.91. I must add that both the network folder icon and the URL icon on the desktop are unsuitable. Something like gnome-globe.png that you get when dragging a URL to the panel would be a lot better, and more consistent to boot.
> Representing a webpage as a network volume feels especially strange to me. Well, but if you use the connect to server dialog, you'll always create a GnomeVFSDrive link. You should rather use the "Create Launcher" feature from the desktop context menu and choose "Link" as launcher type.
It is not the question what I *should* use. The fact is that GNOME has multiple methods to do the same thing, yet the result is different in appearance. If it *is* a duck, it should walk like a duck and quack like a duck :-)
Alex, Dave, Martin: Do you think we should create a .desktop link if the user chose to connect to a "Custom" server?
Ping? (by the way I just noticed that the context menu of a http "volume" allows me to "Browse folder" which just does the same thing as opening it)
Still valid... Another interesting observation; the network volume icon created by the Connect dialog is a 'text/html' file according to its Nautilus properties.
(pavel: please don't erase version info. thanks.)
Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
