GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 142073
"Places" menu and "computer" contents unification and simplification
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
After putting some thought into it i was wondering if we might consider unifying the user experience for these two interfaces. The thought originally came from my desire to add a "home" entry on the places menu but after a little work i think that we might just be better off making them the same thing. I dont profess to understand the inner working or capabilities of either feature but my unified interface would work something like this. The "places" menu and the "computer" "folder" will both contain the fiollowing items: Home directory Filesystem All user mounted filesystems (including present cdroms and mass storage devices if we have that capability) Templates Trash CD Creator I think that simplifying the interface for these two features will increase the adoption and efficient utilization of each. Maybe even rename the "Places" menu Computer or vice versa. Please let me know what you think.
i should have specified that i am refering to the new spatial interface which i am starting to like alot.
I would like to see a places:/// magic url where you can drag whatever you like to the folder and have it appear under the places menu. Currently it seems impossible to alter the places menu without editing the xml etc. directly, and items like 'CD Creator' appear when the PC may not even have a CD-Writer (or even a CD Drive) attached. I understand you can still make .isos, but the Places menu is not very useful as it stands
Customization is a great idea and a welcome one from this side. I also think however that we should attempt to build the most robust default operation as well for those users who arent advanced enough to attempt to do so. Do you also think that we should unify the two?
