After making a rectangular selection, the size of the selected part of the image
is nowhere to be seen - would be nice to have it in the status bar.

i think this would be useful too, Carol and I were talking about something
similar on the lists.  

I think part of the problem is that status bar messages are being cleared too
quickly, it would be better to leave the selection size there until the next
message comes up (instead of clearing to show the image title, which can already
be seen in the window title bar)

The statusbar API is broken. This is handled in bug #120175 already.

Bug #120175 says it was fixed 2004-07-14, but this bug is still present.
could this be reopened?
