Description Matt T. Proud 2004-04-08 04:54:45 UTC
I found that after opening numerous applications and clicking on the
show-desktop button, the applications would minimize, but they would still
appear open within the workspace-switcher applet.

This behavior seems contrary to the workspace-switcher's normal behavior upon
minimization; for if one minimizes an application manually, that application
will hide itself in the workspace-switcher applet.

I think, show desktop means, just Hide the Windows. even the tool tip says just
'hide all the window'. I think there is a difference between minimizing all
windows and hiding all windows, though it might be the same effect. But when u
click any window or click the same button again, u can see all windows in their
previous state itself. But this is not the case there i think.

So i feel the behaviour is correct. Since it just changes the color in the WS
applet to indicate the hidden behaviour.

Feel free to comment on my thought... :-)

While I can appreciate your rationale for its current behavior, I must admit
that it still seems rather counter-intuitive for the applet to behave as such. I
say this because, at least using Metacity as a WM, one does not have an option
to "hide" a window; rather, one can only "minimize" a window to achieve such an
effect. For this reason, I think it would be best for behavior to be congruent
to Gnome's default window manager, Metacity.

In the end, the decision rests in your hands; I leave it up to you to decide.

I tend to agree with the original reporter. Letting a hidden window be a
different thing from a minimized window when there's no other way of hiding them
than using the show desktop button seems strange to me.
