GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 139304
Visual indicator showing if devices are mounted or not
Last modified: 2012-08-14 00:48:26 UTC
Description of Problem: when i look in the Computer folder on my dekstop, it shows me any devices i have, which is cool. it doesnt give me any visual indication on whether they're mounted or not(or even if there's even media in them). for example, my cdrw shows up, but the icon looks no differnt whether i have it empty, with a cd in it, or with a cd & mounted. it'd be nice if the icon for an unused device was greyed out or had an emblem showing it's state.
You might consider rephrasing the summary of this bug report as it might help draw developer attention if it was clearer. based on what you wrote > it'd be nice if the icon for an unused device was greyed out or had an emblem showing it's state. I would suggest something more like "need visual indicator to show if devices are mounted or not"
Thanks for the bug report. Please don't set milestones, they're for the maintainers (ideally bugzilla would make these fields read-only to people without the appropriate privileges).
Should be reassigned to GNOME-VFS which provides the computer:// view.
I disagree with you here Alex. The Desktop emblem is also handled by Nautilus. IMHO there should really be a mounted eblem which we can then use to display the drive state. I've filed bug 310011 against gnome-icon-theme for that.
This bug affects the sidebar and tree as well as computer:///. I've renamed the bug accordingly. I think there is a case for having a standardised way of indicating when a drive is unmounted. Maybe I'm wrong though. It would be good to get some design input here.
It still isn't clear why this is necessary. Why does a user need to know whether a drive is mounted or not?
Bug 310011 is relevant, btw. There's a suggestion there that an eject button could be used for all mounted drives. That makes sense to me, and would seem to fix this bug.
The eject button is always used for mounted devices in the sidebar. I think this bug is fixed.
