I tried downloading Mac OS X self-contained application bundles of GIMP from this site:
http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/
Clicking on either of the dsk image links - "Gimp-2.0.0.dmg" or "Gimp-1.2.5.dmg" gives a page with 
the message "Could not read file".  Thanks for any assistance.

This problem has already been reported in bug #138570.  Unfortunately,
there is not much that we can do about it because these files are not
hosted on gimp.org.  Please contact the owner of these files (Aaron
Voisine) and ask him to solve this problem.
