GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 136918
Running application's dialogs and windows steal window focus.
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Distribution: Mandrake Linux release 9.2 (FiveStar) for i586 Package: metacity Severity: critical Version: GNOME2.4.1 2.6.x Gnome-Distributor: MandrakeSoft Synopsis: Running applications steal the window focus when they open a new window. Description of Problem: When typing in a terminal or any other application for that matter, the focus of the window in which you are typing is stolen by a dialog or another window. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. start up a terminal. 2. run gaim 3. tell a firend to im you in 5 seconds. 4. close the messanger window 5. start typing in the terminal Actual Results: The focus of the terminal you are typing in is stolen by the message window. And you keyboard input goes to the gaim window. Expected Results: The gaim message window should be raised to wherever the window manager feel's it should be placed, even over the window you are currently working in. The focus of the window should never be stolen. How often does this happen? This happens every time with every program. Additional Information: I'm not sure this isnt a gaim issue or a metacity isue, but I'm experienced this way too much to be silent. Its the nuber 1 thing I dislike about the gnome desktop. Please, allow and option for this in gconf, or make it default.
Thanks for the bug report. This is both a Metacity & gaim issue (and also a gtk one and startup-notification, etc., etc.). You may need to file a bug against gaim after the appropriate patches are incorporated into gtk (see bug 115650) and Metacity (see bug 118372). I will probably do that (since I already have a patch for gaim to do this), but you might want to double check and make sure I don't forget. :) This should be the default (assuming Gaim cooperates) in GNOME 2.8. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 118372 ***
