Description Changwoo Ryu 2004-03-07 20:56:07 UTC
Some "multimedia keyboards" have "Rotate Windows" key on them. But
metacity doesn't support that key yet. Of course It might be possible to
assign the key as /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/switch_windows but then
Alt-Tab can't be used for that function. (bug 91538)

I think this keysym (XF86XK_RotateWindows in XFree86) should be a default
key binding built into metacity. People always expect window switching
when they press Rotate Windows key. The key's function is definite and fixed.

Just hardcoding this binding seems logical to me, though I'm sure
someone will complain that they want the key to do something else.

The alternative would be to hack metacity to support multiple keys
bound to each function, which is pretty hard.
Comment 2 Changwoo Ryu 2004-03-15 07:31:07 UTC
Hardcoding seems fine to me.

I think we don't have to worry about complains. I have not seen any
Rhythmbox users complaining about its use of Play/Pause/Prev/Next
multimedia keys. If someone complain, it can be suggested to change
his/her X keymap.

See bug 91538 about allowing multiple keys bound to each function...

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all
old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years.

If you still use metacity and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
