Details

Description Erik Hemdal 2004-01-16 22:57:46 UTC
rom: Erik Hemdal <ehemdal@townisp.com>
To: submit@bugs.gnome.org
X-Mailer: bug-buddy 2.4.0
Subject: Nautilus crash wipes out desktop icons

Distribution: Fedora Core release 1 (Yarrow)
Package: nautilus
Severity: normal
Version: GNOME2.4.0 2.0.x
Gnome-Distributor: GNOME.Org
Synopsis: Nautilus crash wipes out desktop icons
Bugzilla-Product: nautilus
Bugzilla-Component: general
Bugzilla-Version: 2.0.x
BugBuddy-GnomeVersion: 2.0 (2.4.0.1)
Description:
Description of the crash:
Nautilus crashed and presented the Error dialog asking me to submit a
bug report. Occurred on Fedora Core 1 with latest kernel.

After the crash, all the icons on my Desktop are gone (Trash, Start
Here, and Home folders). Trying to restart Nautilus from the Red Hat
menu DID NOT work. The context-sensitive menu on the desktop
(right-click menu) is also gone.

Steps to reproduce the crash:
1. Start the system and open Nautilus
2. Work normally (I used Open Office)
3. Nautilus crashed while it did not have focus and was not being
used.

Expected Results:

Nothing, since I was not using Nautilus.

How often does this happen?

This is the first time, although it has crashed twice today over a span
of about 3 hours in
various situations.

Additional Information:

Hardware is a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop (2GHz Celeron, 256MB ram).
Running Fedora Core 1 with all updates installed as of 1/16/04.

Sorry for scant detail, but I wasn't using Nautilus and was not
expecting a crash. Post-crash, there isn't much working! :-(

That's pretty annoying.. Can you reproduce this in a recent version of
nautilus (like 2.4 or 2.5)? And if so can you get a more complete
stacktrace? (see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/getting-traces.cgi for more
info)
Comment 2 Erik Hemdal 2004-01-18 01:38:44 UTC
Roger and wilco. I confirmed that the bug occurred in version 2.4.0,
which is what is installed. Next time it crashes, I will attempt to
capture a decent stack trace.

Comment 4 Erik Hemdal 2004-01-18 02:24:54 UTC
Here are the detailed steps for reproducing the crash.

1. Open nautilus and open an OpenOffice file for some edits.

2. Use the Screenshot applet to capture a screen image.

3. When saving the file, nautilus crashes as before.

This scenario resulted in the stacktrace in
bug131735-nautilus-stacktrace.txt.
