GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 130956
bad fonts in gpdf
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
I'm using GPDF, and when i try to open PDFs with mathematical formulas, some characters are replaced by squares. xpdf uses a Serif font to render the PDFs, while gpdf uses a Sans font, and i cannot change that. I'm using "Bitstream Vera Sans" in my Gnome Font configuration. Even when all characters are displayed, the document rendered by xpdf with a Serif font looks better then the document rendered by gpdf with a sans font. I'm using "GNOME PDF Viewer 0.111".
Would you please attach samples and screenshots?
Created attachment 23134 [details] Screenshot of gpdf
I've attached a screenshot, showing gpdf and xpdf opening the same document, and my fonts configuration. The document i'm trying to open is this: http://www.cse.iitk.ac.in/primality.pdf As the screenshot shows, the symbol that looks like an '=', but has 3 dashes, and the 'ffi' from 'coefficient' were replaced by squares. The spacing between the fonts also look better in xpdf. And scientific documents look better with a serif font then with a sans font. (it should, at least, be possible to change it) Actually, I dont know if i'm reporting a bug, or a feature. It makes sense that gpdf is using the same fonts that other programs are using, but it should be a way to change it. I dont know if pdf files have font information inside then.
Reopening the bug because the needed info is here now. Thanks. > I dont know if pdf files have font information inside then. They have, usually (and in this case). When gpdf uses sans for all fonts, it wasn't compiled with support for font-embedding. Usually this means that some private (sigh) headers of gnome-print were not found, in the current Debian case, I think it was freetype breakage and bad timing. (Try recompiling the debian package, the breakage was fixed, the timing should be good now) I think there was a small problem even if gpdf uses embedded fonts. (I'm remote-bugzillaing ATM, can't test in a gpdf)
I am using Fedora Core 2 and can view the PDF (w/ mathematical equations) fine, but if I create a document using OpenOffice 1.1 and Bitstream Vera Serif and save it to PDF, it does not render the font correctly in GPDF. It looks great in XPDF unfortunately.
Should be fine in CVS HEAD now. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 148362 ***
