Description Luc Pi 2003-12-18 21:14:35 UTC
Alternating colors is very good to follow a given row, without loosing the
thread. However, on a big TreeView with many and long rows on screen, it
becomes confusing for the eyes.

I think human eye catch easly up to 6-7 items. With more it requires some
extra efforts. About 6 stripes alternating color, "containing" each about 6
rows would make a much better visual help.

Ideally the height of the stripes would be adjusted according to the number
of visibles rows.

See also http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106406 which could
complete the effect with a top/bottom border, if needed.

See bug 318163 for a patch that would address this using a style property.

I'd argue that this is different from #318163. Also, I am not sure how this should work with rows with different heights (I don't think people should use rows with different heights and row-hinting anyway ...).

Now I am actually looking at the patch in #318163, I figured that it does fix this issue. Marking as DUP.
