GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 127713
long filenames cause huge space between icons
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Description of Problem: A filename, even if it's very long, is printed in full beneath the icon. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Open a nautilus window. 2. Navigate to a directory with many files with very long names Actual Results: The long names are displayed in full, like this: [ICON] This f ile has been gi ven a l ong de scrip tive na me so t hat I ca n rememb (repeated several times across er what the screen for successive files) it is l ater wi thout h aving t o open it.pdf [ICON] This is another file wi th a sh orter n ame.txt Expected Results: Long filenames that would wrap to more that two lines should be truncated, like this: [ICON] This f ile ... [ICON] This is ano ... with an ellipses to show that the file's name has been truncated. How often does this happen? Every time I try to manage files in a directory which contains files with long names. Additional Information: This problem gets worse with decreased magnification. I'm comfortable working file icons at "50%" or "75%" magnification, but shrinking the icons size also shrinks the column that the entire filename is wrapped into, so the filenames actually take up more vertical distance the smaller the icons get.
