On Debian, gpdf is linked against libpaper to select the correct size of
paper from the system default. The correct setting is in gpdf's paper size
printer option menu by default.

However, if I change output to be to "generic postscript," this reverts to
A4 and I have to select Letter size manually.

Gpdf is no longer maintained, closing WONTFIX. Please use Evince for your pdf
viewing needs.

evince exhibits exactly the same bug.  Reopen, reassign to evince.
