Description Charles Iliya Krempeaux 2003-10-28 17:21:12 UTC
[This is basically a USABILITY BUG I am filing.]

The gnome-font-viewer is an excellent tool for viewing fonts.

When configured properly, Galeon and Mozilla can use it to display fonts
the find on the web. (I.e., when they get the "application/x-font-ttf",
etc MIME types.

When configured properly, things like File Roller can use it to display
fonts contained in Zip files (and other Compressed file formats).

What is needed is a way to install fonts that are viewer (with
gnome-font-viewer) from Mozilla, Galeon, and File Roller.

There needs to be 2 buttons. One button (when clicked) would install the
font locally, just for yourself (after confirming with the user that it is
OK). (Probably by putting it into the "~/.fonts" directory. [Or whatever
directory is set up with FontConfig] And maybe then running "fc-cache.)

The second button (when clicked) would allow you to install it for everyone
(after prompting the user for the "root" password, and then confirming with
the user that it is OK). And put it in whatever the system wide shared
font directory is. (Something you should be able to get fron FontConfig
I'd imagine.)

This would make GNOME much more usable for artists (and everyone else).
