It would be greatly useful to draw a histogram in the background of the
curve box in the "adjust color curves" panel--this way the curve can be set
in a meaningful manner, rather than through guesswork.

Yes, that would be nice indeed and shouldn't be that hard to implement.
But it has been suggested before, see bug #71633.
