Description Chandrashekhar. Korlahalli 2003-08-26 13:37:11 UTC
In scintific calculator, " Rand " key is read as " rand", should be read
as " Random number ", as given in the tool tip.

With the following steps problem can be reproduced.

1. start gnome session, start terminal window, start gnopernicus, & wait
till you hear the sound.

2. start gcaltool application from application menu.

3. focus the " Rand " key, using arrow keys.

4. screen reader reads it as "rand",

5. It make good sense if screen reader reads it as " random number",
as given in the tool tip.

Could you test with the latest version of gcalctool please.
A lot of work has been done recently w.r.t. improving
accessibility support and better keyboard handling.

The latest version of gcalctool can be found under:

http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gcalctool/4.3/

Does the problem still occur with this version (with tooltips
on)?

The tooltip for the Rand key in the latest version is

N_("Random number in the range 0.0 to 1.0")

and the accessible text associated with that key is:

N_("Random number"),

Rich: by 'accessible text associated with that key', do you mean the
accessible-name property?

I think that for pragmatic reasons we can't expect the default speech
to be a lot different from what's onscreen - one might argue that
making accessible name for "Rand" equal "random number" has its own
drawbacks. It's not totally clear in this case, I will grant, but
bearing in mind "bandwidth" and utterance-time issues, for some users
"rand" would actually be preferred. Certainly it's a compromise
between concision and clarity, and in most cases I think we're
assuming that the text presented to the sighted user (except for
symbols, etc.) is also appropriate as the spoken output.

Reading the tooltips (i.e. accessible-descriptions) by default is not
something we should expect the screenreader to do, the accessible-name
property is the one generally spoken during "ordinary" navigation.

of course bug 120745 is a good illustration of when using
accessible-name that's different from the onscreen label can be a good
idea... :-)

Now I am using gcaltool version 4.3.2.
The above problem has been taken care.
Hence, I am closing this bug. Thanks for supporting & providing
information.
