GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 120215
Regression: Panel size chooser
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
The panel size chooser used to have a human readable combo box with sizes like Small and Large, but now we have a box to specify the px size. Users really shouldn't need to know about pixcel measure to change their panel size.
I agree. talking it #gnome it was brought up that the old way is problematic due to higher screen resolution(eg large being quite small on some resolutions) so I think there are two solutions here, a) go back to the human readable combo box, but with inteligent sizes, so that the actual pixel size is determined based on screen resolution b) use a slider from smaller, where 12 pixels is the minimum to larger, where the maximum is something like 25-35% of the total screen size in the orientation direction. so for vertically oriented panels 25% of the width, or for horizontal 25% of the height. etc. and with a few predefined marks on the slider representing the usual defaults (also still based on what the screen resolution is) I would be in favour of either but the latter seems more reasonable imo for the larger majority of people. Human understandable, with good semi-smart defaults and still highly tweakable.( and thus no hidden gconf options to muddy the water either)
This was a deliberate choice, since the old sizes didn't mean much either. Agreed that a slider might not be a bad idea, but it's probably better to discuss this on usability@, come to a decision, and then file a bug- bugzilla is not a very good tool for discussing such things. Closing; reopen when usability@ has a solid decision.
