Description Thilo 2003-08-03 08:21:18 UTC
I do not want to use a network proxy with all applications! If I turn proxy
on with Galeon in Gnome2 gweather(applet) gets also a proxy. This makes it
unfunctional.

Please try to make proxy optional oder some kind of ("use gnome settings")
setting.

I sometimes like to use different proxies (filtering/caching). I think it
is good that one MAY use a general proxy - but its nonsense to make it a
MUST as it would be to allow only one email account...

Reopening since this is a different issue.

Can you clarify why different proxies per application are useful?

No more info supplied. I can't think of a reasonable use-case where a
browser would want a differnt proxy from other applications.
Comment 4 Thilo 2003-10-16 12:19:01 UTC
Sorry, I forgot to answer.

YOu ask the wrong questions. What your solution right now does calls
for the question: is there anay need to reduce the users choice to
only one proxy for all applications? This may seem to be a clear case
for a single user environment with only one proxy. But as you might
know there are differences between caching and filtering proxies (some
may do both). So the task of a proxy can allways be different. Also
users who tend do use more than one browser tend to give them special
uses. I can hardly imagine why you asked the other question as I daily
use the options: "direct connection" , "automatic proxy detection"
"different proxies" with different applications. There are
applications that do not like proxies (like gweather). So I should use
dreict connection, but If I switch it off, I do not get my webpages
filtered with Galeon. So you are forcing me to eitehr NOT use a proxy
or switching proxy setting every minute.

Every global setting should beused thoughtfully. I have notghing
against an option to use a central setting, because it might be
usefull for 70% of all users. But I hate not to be able to use more
than one proxy any more (as I use it since years). On some points in
Gnome2 developers are going too far with "usability".

PS: I can not reopen the bug. Bugzilla says I have not submitted it!?

Passing the Control Centre people for their comments, IMO this is
NOTABUG, it makes no sense for the average user to have multiple proxies.
Comment 6 Fernando Herrera 2004-02-12 09:13:57 UTC
Reasigning bug to hear control-center maintainers voice, but also a
vote here for NOTABUG
Comment 7 Teppo Turtiainen 2005-07-15 16:43:32 UTC
Would control-center maintainers care to comment on this one?
Comment 8 Sebastien Bacher 2005-07-16 14:21:35 UTC
that's not a gnome-control-center issue, how do you want to set different proxy
from here and point what application should use it? That would rather be an
application option, closing the bug as suggested by other comments.
