GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 109802
desktop icons cannot be aligned to a grid
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
A feature that's been missing from Nautilus is the ability to arrange the desktop icons so that they are aligned in a neat way in a grid. This has been missing from the start, and I can't understand how it could have been overlooked. Currently, one can only arrange icons by name, meaning that the icons get rearranged and mixed up. This is undesirable if the user wishes certain icons to appear in certain areas of the desktop in a way that is organized. This is one feature which makes Gnome sloppy from an anesthetics perspective, and IMHO it reflects badly on the appearance of the desktop. This is a usablitiy issue which will quickly irritate users. Users will try to align the desktop icons manually, regardless of whether the feature is missing or not. They will become irritated by the missing feature and may ultimately be turned away from Gnome. This is not a feature for power users but rather a feature for the average Joe.
Hopefully this will get done in the 2.3.x series. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 41671 ***
