GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 106243
Translation of test strings
Last modified: 2012-09-05 14:39:32 UTC
lowercase_text, uppercase_text and punctuation_text should be marked for translation in the font viewer. That would allow translators to add local characters (for example accentuated characters) in these strings. So users would see immediatly if the visualizated font contains all the needed characters for his language.
Created attachment 20135 [details] [review] Proposed patch. Plus it makes font-view.c use GNOME's i18n implementation.
The comments for upper case and lower case are reversed. Maybe the comments to the translators shouldn't say that the string should contain all lower case characters. What should happen for languages that doesn't have lower/upper case characters. Perhaps it should just say that "these strings are shown in the font view as examples".
where are these strings used ? In the fonts:/// list I only get "Aa" pixmap as preview, are you expecting to get extra chars here ?
They are used in gnome-font-viewer. The french translation includes accented characters in the sample sentence now: « Portez ce vieux whiksy au juge blond qui fume. 0123456789. איטחשפ. » But that would be better to have special characters in lowercase_text and uppercase_text.
ok, thanks, in fact there is a new bug related to the new mime system, gnome-font-viewer is not used when you click on a font in fonts:/// I'm sure there is a real interest to add extra chars but it can't hurt. Permission to commit this to HEAD ?
Comment on attachment 20135 [details] [review] Proposed patch. Plus it makes font-view.c use GNOME's i18n implementation. Don't those comments need to be of the form /* xgettext : ... before they will show up in the .po files ?
Is there really alot of utility translating these groups while using upper, lower. punct as the groupings ? I can see it being helpful in some languages, but certainly not helpful for many asian scripts. When things are merged into an apperance capplet we should probably just remove the distinctions between the upper/lower/punct sets and replace it with a single 'sample_text' string that would be localized.

What about displaying word characters according to the locale, and then a pangram provided by translators?
-> gnome-utils gnome-font-viewer has now moved to gnome-utils, reassigning.
With the current version of font-viewer, accented characters are shown in the sample sentence, which renders this bug report obsolete.
