This problem occurs when the panel is moved to the left side of the
screen.  Once moved it works fine but when re-logging in, the panel
keeps crashing.  The only way to stop the problem is to remove the
.gconf*, .gnome* directories in the home directory.

This occurs with Linux 8.0 Version 2.4.18-14 and 2.4.18-19.8.0
