GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 103023
ESC doesn't close the Find dialog
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
This is because of a change in gtk >= 2.1.x: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=74221 I maybe just too used to the old behavior, but I find this new behavior very annoying (I don't even recall ever actually clicking the Close button, or pressing Alt-C.) Now, the question is, 1) is this NOTABUG, or 2) can the Close button changed into a Cancel button, or 3) can we make ESC close the dialog anyway? I wouldn't want to fight existing guidelines, but this one just feels awkward. But then again, it could be just me and my old habits. Ideas?

I don't know much about the HIG, but I do use "Escape" to close Find dialogs and the like. It's a pretty standard "I want to leave now" key. Maybe it makes sense for Escape to initiate any Cancel actions if such actions make sense, and just Close where there's nothing to roll back?

Let's see what the HIG team has to say.
