GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 102908
Creating/editing launchers on the Desktop using GUI is broken
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Package: nautilus Severity: normal Version: 2.0.8 Synopsis: Creating/editing launchers on the Desktop using GUI is broken Bugzilla-Product: nautilus Bugzilla-Component: Desktop Description: Description of Problem: When creating new "launchers" on the Desktop using the right-mousebutton popup menu, newbie users are presented with a dialog that could not possibly be more confusing. What is the difference between "Name" and "Generic name"? What is a "FSDevice", "ServiceType", etc.? There is no "Help" button either. Moreover, once the launcher has been created, the "Properties" command will not display the same dialog that was used for creating the launcher, but the standard Nautlius dialog, which does not allow to alter most of the settings made in the dialog for creating the launcher. Unexperienced users are forced to delete the launcher and start anew. In short, the whole process of creating "launchers" on the Desktop with the supplied GUI frontend is pretty much unusable for newbies. It's just plain broken. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Select "New Launcher" from RMB popup menu on desktop Actual Results: Confusing dialogs, no "context help", no way of correcting errors through the GUI once the launcher has been created. Expected Results: A guided process that just works, like in MS Windows or KDE. How often does this happen? Everytime. Additional Information: What more can I say? ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2003-01-09 03:33 ------- The original reporter (florian_bachmann@t-online.de) of this bug does not have an account here. I agree. I'm going to mark priority->high ("cosmetic bug of high visibility"?), but I'm not sure if that's right so I'll leave the bugsquad keyword off. I'm going to set version->2.0.x, add the GNOMEVER2.0 keyword, and mark as new.
This dialog does indeed suck, but it is not a nautilus bug. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 95331 ***
