I also tried to move the pane border, but the panes don't resize even though the mouse cursor stays in its up-down form while I drag it, indicating that it's grabbing that border.

Observed on Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS trusty with Xfce 4.10, Gnumeric v1.12.9.
Panes auto-size and resize reasonably on Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS precise with Xfce 4.8, Gnumeric v1.10.17.

Sounds like another gtk+ abi break.

What gtk+ version?

This was fixed 2+ years ago, please upgrade to a newer goffice version. The patch is tivial and was never applied to ubuntu. I'm wondering what LTS means for them.
