GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 744904
Cannot turn off caribou on touch screen though physical keyboard present
Last modified: 2015-03-02 18:30:27 UTC
When I touch a finger in the input field appears caribou. But I have a physical keyboard and caribou do not need me and I can not turn it off. Arch linux Gnome 3.14.2
As a workaround, you could do: gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.cursor active false Whether to show OSK is controlled by gnome-settings-daemon's cursor plugin, which currently checks if the active input device is a touch screen. But as you said, it might make more sense to check if no keyboard device is attached.
Reassigning to gnome-settings-daemon.
That's working as designed. Why do you want to use the touchscreen without using the on-screen keyboard? Are you asking for bug 739293 ("Hide OSK when physical keyboard is used")?
Bastien Nocera 1)It is not comfortable because carbou occupies 45% screen. 2)What's the function?

Bastien Nocera, I am in a similar circumstance to Lost. I use the touchscreen interchangeably with the touchpad mouse on my Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series (3137 model) and caribou comes up while the touchscreen is active, but I prefer to type with the physical keyboard because I type much faster with it. I would also like to have a user-friendly way of disabling caribou AND using the touchscreen at the same time. I think there are many users out there who would like to use the touchscreen and physical keyboard at the same time -- which, I believe, makes it more than relevant to have the OSK/caribou active as an option rather than a mandate. Appreciate your time in reading my opinion and thoughts.
Given the use case, I think it's well covered by bug 739293 ("Hide OSK when physical keyboard is used"), bugs in OSK notwithstanding (as in comment 4, where it might hide the entry we're trying to fill in). *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 739293 ***
