This happens for most rows in the graph's hierarchy, not just the "series" but also the top level item ("Chart") of the treeview. Some items, such as "X1 Axis" are (strangely) not affected.

This is most likely gtk version specific. Which version of gtk are you using?
Comment 3 Jean-François Fortin Tam 2014-02-18 18:31:12 UTC
GTK 3.10 (I think I remember seeing it back in the GTK 3.8 days too, but I'm not sure)

Also, there's this issue where the pane position jumps around all the time; is that the same issue or should I file a separate bug about that?
Comment 5 Andreas J. Guelzow 2014-02-18 19:04:00 UTC
This looks like there were changes in the way gtk allocates space. I don't see any of this with gtk 3.8. I don't think that there is a point in filing separate bugs for that. These problems will likely be fixed when Jean moves to gtk 3.10.
Comment 6 Jean Bréfort 2014-02-19 14:46:24 UTC
Which goffice version? and which Gtk+ version? I don't see that with current git and Gtk+-3.10.7. Might be a duplicate of #719681.
Comment 7 Jean-François Fortin Tam 2014-02-19 15:15:49 UTC
goffice 0.10.9 and GTK 3.10.6.

I tested a package of goffice 0.10.10 sitting on Fedora's build servers and it solves the problem, irrespective of the GTK version, so it's the same issue indeed.
