Original Redmine bug id: 1879
Original URL: http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/1879
Searchable id: yorba-bug-1879
Original author: Bengt Thuree
Original description:

Some people do not want to modify the original photo image at all, as well as
a raw photo format do not contain any metadata at all.

In these cases it would be good if Shotwell would handle storing/reading
metadata in an optional sidecar file.

Should be an option to store metadata

a) If possible embedded, if not, then external sidecar file. (default)

b) Always embedded in photo

c) Always as an external sidecar file

d) Both embedded (if possible), as well as external sidecar file.

Writing to sidecar file now available with GExiv2 master

It looks as though somebody wrote a tool to pull the relevant information out of the Shotwell database and use exiv2 to write XMP sidecar files, to assist people moving from Shotwell to Darktable:
https://redmine.darktable.org/issues/9461

Just thought I would post in case it is helpful, or assists anybody else who needs this feature before it is developed.

FWIW: It strikes me that this feature is a great option to allow portability to other photo management software while maintaining the "never touch the original" philosophy.
