GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 703150
Please relicense art to CC-BY-SA 3.0
Last modified: 2015-09-08 10:39:10 UTC
gnome-weather includes several background images in data/ that are licensed under the CC-BY-SA 2.0 license. The Debian Project does not consider the CC-BY-SA 2.0 license as meeting the Debian Free Software Guidelines although 3.0 is ok.[1][2] Please use the option to relicense the artwork under CC-BY-SA 3.0 using the "or later" option built-in to paragraph 4.b. of the 2.0 license: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/legalcode [1] http://evan.prodromou.name/ccsummary/ccsummary.html [2] http://wiki.debian.org/DFSGLicenses#Creative_Commons_Attribution_Share-Alike_.28CC-BY-SA.29_v3.0
I'm not the copyright holder for the artwork, and I don't think we can contact them easily either (the images were taken from flickr). Also, I'm not a lawyer, so... what is it expected here? Should I add a notice? What kind and where?
You don't need to get approval from the original copyright owners to relicense under CC-BY-SA 3.0 because CC-BY-SA 2.0 has an "or later" option. You already have a notice at https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-weather/tree/data/CREDITS You can just update it to say that the files are under CC-BY-SA 3.0. Thanks
Do I need to relicense CC-BY too?
I apologize for not reading CREDITS closely enough. It appears that the CC-BY licenses don't have the "or later" option that the CC-BY-SA licenses though. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/legalcode gnome-weather can't be distributed in Debian with CC-BY 2.0 assets. You can either contact the copyright owners to request that they relicense or find replacement art.
Uhm... CC-BY is a lot more liberal than CC-BY-SA. Are you sure that CC-BY 2.0 is not fine?
Hi, Any progress on this side? According to[0][1] only CC-BY(-SA) 3.0+ are accepted in the debian archive [0] http://evan.prodromou.name/ccsummary/ccsummary.html [1] https://wiki.debian.org/DFSGLicenses
(In reply to comment #6) > Hi, > > Any progress on this side? > > According to[0][1] only CC-BY(-SA) 3.0+ are accepted in the debian archive Right, but as I told before, I'm not the copyright holder of this work, so I'm not allowed to relicense. If you want progress, you should contact the original authors through their emails or flickr account.
Maybe for progress, you should consider use others background images with a better licence, no?
For the Debian package I’m preparing, I have replaced the artwork with better licensed pictures. Here is the new CREDITS file. weather-clear By: Vincent Guyot URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AlpesVuesJura.jpg License: CC BY 3.0 weather-clear-night By: European Southern Observatory URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Starry_Night_at_La_Silla.jpg License: CC BY 4.0 weather-few-clouds By: “Kurdistann” URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clouds_%285%29.jpg License: CC BY-SA 3.0 weather-few-clouds-night By: Prateek Karandikar URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Moon_clouds.JPG License: GFDL 1.2, CC BY-SA 1.0 to 4.0 weather-fog By: Ian Furst URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tree_in_field_during_extreme_cold_with_frozen_fog.png License: CC BY-SA 3.0 weather-overcast By: Kevin Udy URL: http://coclouds.com/488/thunderstorms/2013-03-30/ License: CC BY-SA 3.0 weather-showers weather-showers-scattered By: Unknown URL: http://www.public-domain-image.com/full-image/nature-landscapes-public-domain-images-pictures/rain-public-domain-images-pictures/rain-droplets.jpg.html License: Public domain weather-snow By: “Sara2” URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schneeflocken_in_Deutschland_-_20100102.jpg License: Public domain weather-storm By: Florent Chouffot URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cloud-to-cloud_ramified_lightning_discharges.jpg License: CC BY-SA 3.0
I'm not an artist myself, so I'll let the designers comment on the new wallpapers. In any case, this will only go upstream for 3.18, 3.16 is UI frozen.

Nice find, Josselin. I do think we'll need a better shot for clear, clouds, overcast and perhaps snow is also problematic with the contrast/inverted background on top. I'll give it another look, making sure we go for CCBYSA3+
We already found a better one for weather-clear: http://www.public-domain-image.com/free-images/wallpapers/kite-on-sky/attachment/kite-on-sky
I'm in the process of contacting some of the authors for relicensing and I noticed the weather-storm image doesn't actually correspond to the image linked.
I've tweaked and incorporated some of the assets Josselin found -- http://jimmac.musichall.cz/stuff/0001-better-backdrops.patch Waiting for a response from the remaining authors. However if you find some appropriate replacements, don't hesitate to mention them here (so far the alternatives have been on the poor side).
The above patch has been extended to fully cover the used backgrounds. Most of the content is Public Domain now, with a few CCBYSA3.0 and one CCBY3.0 licensed photos.
Hard freeze is approaching. Giovanni, do you think we can get this in for 3.18?
Oh I missed the update to the patch. We missed the UI freeze (that was .90), but I think it can still go in to 3.18 because I don't expect any release notes on gnome-weather.
