GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 695491
hard to guess how many search results you get - nicer treatment for more results
Last modified: 2017-08-15 23:15:30 UTC
Right now when I do a search it's slightly hard to imagine how many additional search results I get for each search. How much more should I refine my search query to find what I seek? Currently I get a little [+] symbol on top of the source if there are more results than 3. Maybe this could be a number instead, similar to how google.com gives me 2100000000 hits for "development", so yeah, I should probably make that "software development" (80400000 hits) or "gnome software development" (151000 hits).
I agree that the current indication isn't very clear. Got any ideas, Jakub?
Numbers instead of the [+] symbols possibly? Not a super-high concern, so I'll change this to Low Importance.
Created attachment 259877 [details] mockups I think the main issues are: 1. The icon doesn't look that great - the colours are a bit harsh and it seems small. 2. The meaning isn't particularly clear either - it doesn't obviously say "more results". I think it would be much clearer if we had a label that indicated how many more search results there are. Placing this at the bottom of each section of results would communicate the intent in the clearest way, but if space is an issue we could continue to use the app icon. Mockups are attached.

I lean towards using the label as well.
I like #3 as well. I'll look into this as well.
I have a very simple patch for #3. I think the label alone looks better below results, but separating it from the search provider icon causes more issues than it solves. Making use of the available space below the search provider is an argument too. This would introduce a new translatable string with plural forms to cope with languages that may use different "more's" depending on the number. My only concern is in dealing with overflows for very large numbers. Do we show the bare number of results no matter how big it is?
Created attachment 303105 [details] [review] Add class for exceeding search results label This one is for the gnome-shell-sass module. Designers: you probably want to change the theming.
Created attachment 303106 [details] [review] Add label to search provider icon ...and as for gnome-shell. Let me know what you think
What's the status of this patch?
(In reply to Andreas Nilsson from comment #0) > Currently I get a little [+] symbol on top of the source if there are more > results than 3. Maybe this could be a number instead Still the situation in 3.24
This should have been fixed by the more thorough search refinement in bug 749957. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 749957 ***
