GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 663208
Recommended Changes to section 8.2
Last modified: 2018-06-29 23:02:46 UTC
per discussion on Gnucash-users: -8.2.1. Predefined Accounts -To use the predefined investment account hierarchy, you must create a new GnuCash file. This will run the New Account Hierarchy Setup assistant. After choosing the default currency to use, you will be asked to Choose accounts to create. At this point, choose the Investment Accounts option (along with any others you are interested in). Assuming only Investment Accounts were selected, this will create an account hierarchy as shown below. -8.2.2. Custom Accounts Example -You can also manually setup your own investment account hierarchy. +8.2.1. Using Predefined Investment Accounts Assistant +The Investment Accounts option of the New Account Hierarchy Setup assistant will automatically create a basic investment account hierarchy for you. However, to use the predefined investment account hierarchy, you must create a new GnuCash file, which will run the New Account Hierarchy Setup assistant. After choosing the default currency to use, you will be asked to Choose accounts to create. At this point, choose the Investment Accounts option (along with any others you are interested in). Assuming only Investment Accounts were selected, this will create an account hierarchy as shown below. +8.2.2 Creating Investment Accounts Manually +If you want to set up your own investment accounts hierarchy, you may of course do so. Investments usually have a number of associated accounts that need to be created: an asset account to track the investment itself; an income account to track dividend transactions; and expense accounts to track investment fees and commissions. +8.3 Custom Accounts Example [The following is a somewhat more complicated example...]
Created attachment 200848 [details] [review] Fix #663208 guide: Reword some passages of §8.2.
Comment on attachment 200848 [details] [review] Fix #663208 I believe both the old and and the new text are wrong. You don't have to create a new file anymore to add investment accounts. Instead you can add them to any existing datafile as follows: - open the data file - switch to the accounts tab - choose Actions -> New Account Hierarchy This will open the New Account Hierarchy assistant and allows you to select additional accounts to add to your existing hierarchy.
Note: I believe this is what Derek was hinting at on the mailing list when he said the section could use some rewording.
Created attachment 200953 [details] [review] New method for running New Account Hierarchy Geert, thanks for reviewing :-) I've made the new method the primary one, with a note about the old method.
Btw, my second patch should be applied after my first. To get them in order, see my bugfix branch at https://github.com/yawaramin/gnucash-docs/tree/bug%2F663208
