This bug shows the same symptoms (and is triggered the same way) as bug 605704.

Luke Symes found a suspicious commit that turned out to be the culprit (reverting it fixed the problem for me):

Right; I reverted my fix and reopened the original report, as this bug is more annoying than the other.
