GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 623339
Empathy does not propose to install necessary codec for Gtalk video calls
Last modified: 2010-09-17 08:04:22 UTC
On Ubuntu 10.04 Empathy with telepathy PPA Video calls with a Windows Gmail (Gtalk plugin) user is not possible of my system does not have the ubuntu-restricted-codecs , but Empathy does not automatically proposes to install this package. (was first reported on Launchpad : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/599024 )
gstreamer0.10-ffmepg and gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse in Ubuntu are enough. no need to install the whole ubuntu-restricted-extras
Dear all Is there a way for Empathy to implement the following ? - when the user creates a Google Talk account, check if gstreamer0.10-ffmepg and gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse are installed - if they are not detected, WARN the user and propose to install them
I'd rather display it when a video call fails because of lack of H264. Google talk accounts can be used to make Theora accounts and H264 can be used with XMPP accounts as well.
I agree with you, at the condition that the video failure should be smooth (not be seen as a "crash") by the users (e.g. both Linux and Windows sides), so that they both get the feeling that the video call is "waiting" for the codecs to be installed. For example : - Empathy user is being displayed a message "To do video call you need to install the following : ..." - the interlocutor is being displayed a message "Your interlocutor needs to install the accurate codec, please wait."
