Isn't this supposed to lead to Kbuild-like output while building?  It doesn't seem to make any difference to the output of the build process when I apply it.

It should yes. But until gnome-doc-utils/gtk-doc/intltool is also fixed there will be some noise still.

With my patch to gnome-doc-utils (and automake 1.11) the output was looking pretty good. I'll attach the build output I get.
