in empathy 2.29.4 the status icon(available,away,busy..) of a contact is not visible clearly beause 3/4 part of that status icon gets covered by the protocol icon(gtalk,yahoo,wlm...)

This option is now disabled by default. Closing as a dup of bug #605822 as this option is meant to be used for people who care about the protocol (most don't).
