Bug 591303 - Empathy won't honour proxy "ignored hosts"

Description IBBoard 2009-08-10 08:56:56 UTC
Please describe the problem:
At work I'm on a network that uses a proxy to get to the outer world. We've also got an internal Jabber server. In the Gnome "Network Proxy Preferences" everything on the internal network is excluded from going through the proxy (".internal.example.com") but Empathy still sends connections to the internal Jabber server through the proxy ("jabber.internal.example.com").

Setting the proxy server preferences to "direct connection" fixes Empathy but breaks all other external access.

Looks like it is related to bug 492076, but from a slightly different angle (it is using the proxy, but not listening to the ignored hosts).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect computer to a network that requires a proxy for external connections and no proxy for internal connections with a Jabber server on the internal network
2. Add local network to Ignored Hosts list (".internal.example.com")
3. Set up Empathy Jabber account to connect to internal network's Jabber server

Actual results:
Empathy sits with the "loading" icon but never completes. Wireshark shows that the proxy returned a HTTP error response because port 5222 couldn't be routed through a HTTP proxy.

Expected results:
Empathy pays attention to the "ignored hosts", doesn't use the proxy server and makes a direct connection to the internal Jabber server.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

Other information:
Testing of connections to external Jabber servers won't be possible because of network policies.

Tested in Empathy 2.26.2 (default from Fedora 11) and 2.27.5 (Rawhide build of Empathy installed in Fedora).

Empathy basically doesn't support any kind of proxy atm. Closing this bug as a
dup of bug #602824 for now. We'll reconsider specific case once we'll have
generic proxy support working.
