Description Paul Bolle 2008-11-18 13:29:45 UTC
0) The Exchange Operations plugin [*] adds two entries to the File menu of all components (except the Memos component).

1) One of those entries will be
    "Subscribe to Other User's Folder"
    "Subscribe to Other User's Contacts"
    "Subscribe to Other User's Calendar"
    "Subscribe to Other User's Tasks"

Unless Evolution (or the Exchange Server involved) does something truly magical, these commands will need further input, so these commands need to be ellipsized.

2) The "Subscribe [...]" entry and the "Permissions..." entry are useless (at least that's my guess) unless the Evolution Exchange "connector" is installed. That connector is not installed on my PC. However:
- these entries are still sensitive
- these entries fail silently when clicked (i.e. they seem to do nothing).

3) Since I can't say what these entries are supposed to do, it's hard to say whether these need to be "File" entries. They do look more like account or folder specific entries.

[*] On current Fedora Rawhide (which shouldn't differ too much from Fedora 10) this is not a plugin anymore (it cannot be disabled).
Comment 1 Matthew Barnes 2008-11-18 16:19:53 UTC
Confirming. All valid observations.

The "File" menu tends to be where plugins thoughtlessly cram things. The Subscribe options probably belong under the "Folder" or "Actions" menus. Not sure about Permissions. I can't seem to get that item to actually do anything, despite my having an Exchange account configured.

Note, Exchange Operations is technically still a plugin. But it's what we call a "system" plugin, which just means it's not meant to be disabled by users. So we recently quit showing system plugins in the Plugin Manager. You'll notice several other plugins have disappeared as well.

I have no defense for why we ship Exchange Operations in Evolution and not Evolution Exchange.

Slightly off topic: I was considering filing a bug with fedora asking for the Exchange Operations plugin stuff to be shipped with evolution-exchange (as a temporary solution). Is that feasible (i.e. can evolution be shipped without a "system plugin")? If so, would you like me to file that bug?
Comment 3 Matthew Barnes 2008-11-18 17:26:53 UTC
Better to handle that here than at a distro level (you'd just see me or Milan toss it upstream anyway :). But go ahead and file the bug (here). I'm kinda curious now what the issues are.

(And yeah, Evolution can get by without system plugins. They're just extensions that aren't meant to be fiddled with by users, is all.)

That will be bug #561407.

All the above got addressed meanwhile, mainly by changes around bug #456240. Feel free to check with 2.29.1+.
