GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 559954
gnome-control-center: wrong translation "Bildschirme spiegeln" -> "Bildschirme klonen"
Last modified: 2010-12-07 17:13:30 UTC
or longer: "gleiche Ausgabe auf allen/beiden Bildschirmen" "Bildschirme spiegeln" means "mirror displays".
> "Bildschirme spiegeln" means "mirror displays". Das ist auch genau der Original-String, deshalb verstehe ich nicht, warum es momentan "falsch" ist. Vielleicht missverstaendlich, okay... 1824 #. Translators: this is the feature where what you see on your laptop's 1825 #. * screen is the same as your external monitor. Here, "Mirror" is being 1826 #. * used as an adjective, not as a verb. For example, the Spanish 1827 #. * translation could be "Pantallas en Espejo", *not* "Espejar Pantallas". 1828 #. 1829 #: ../capplets/display/display-capplet.glade.h:2 1830 #: ../capplets/display/xrandr-capplet.c:1314 1831 msgid "Mirror Screens" 1832 msgstr "Bildschirme spiegeln"

Vielleicht missverstaendlich, okay... I didn't know, where to look for the english original text, but the feature is better described by "clone" than by "mirror". One would use a "mirror" function, if one projects on a screen from behind. In so far I suggest to change the original text (and of course the german translation).
"Clone" is completely wrong to me. After creating a clone, a clone can act on its own and different from the "original". I also expect translation issues from the word clone. A mirror is a kind of copy that is always kept in sync, hence a good description to me.

But perhaps you are thinking too much of "Clone Wars". ;-) > A mirror is a kind of copy that is always kept in sync, hence a good > description to me. I would say, that concerning displays the word "mirror" bears first of all the meaning that left and right are inverted and texts which are mirrored can't be read easily. Here are some other words, which are imho better: - copy - duplicate - replicate - reproduce - dual view In german perhaps "Bildschirme kopieren" or "Bildschirme duplizieren" are possible translations.
Ich finde "spiegeln" ebenfalls missverständlich, eben weil in einem Spiegel alles spiegelverkehrt dargestellt wird. Anstatt "Bildschirm duplizieren" möchte ich "Bildschirminhalt duplizieren" vorschlagen. ? Das ganze betrifft aber eigentlich nicht nur die deutsche Übersetzung, denn auch im Original ist "mirror screens" leicht misszuverstehen.

Windows 7 uses "Duplicate screens" for this term. Does that sound good / should we use it?
I think that you thinking that "Mirror" would change left to right and such is half-astonishment on my part, and half thinking that you're being too pedantic. We use "Mirror displays" now.
+ <property name="label" translatable="yes">_Mirror displays</property> Vague. Is Mirror a verb or a noun? Is Displays a verb or a noun? See http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/DevGuidelines/Use%20comments
That was a separate bug (as the translator comment was lacking before anyway), but I fixed it.
