Description Ricardo Correia 2008-11-03 13:06:31 UTC
Currently, trying to change folders in the mail component is difficult and error-prone with keyboard navigation.

If there are multiple accounts, the current way to change from one INBOX to another using the keyboard (when the focus is on the message list), is to press Shift-F6, type the name of the account, press Shift-TAB, press the Down arrow key, and then F6 again.

I propose introducing a "Go to folder" command (with, for example, a Ctrl-G shortcut), which would pop-up a dialog similar to the "Move message to folder" command (Shift-Ctrl-V), let the user select a folder and then go to folder, putting the keyboard focus on the message list.

I don't see the advantage at all.
The "Go to folder" dialog shows *EXACTLY* what is already in the left pane.

Please elaborate.

What do you mean, by the "Go to folder" dialog shows what is in the left pane?
Do you mean there is already a "go to folder" dialog?
If there is, I can't find it..

If you meant the "move to folder" dialog, then yes, it shows exactly what is in the left pane, and that's what I am requesting for the "go to folder" functionality.

> Please elaborate.

I've already explained why this would be useful, but in case I wasn't clear, then please do this exercise to see what I mean:

1) Make sure you have 2 or more accounts created.
2) Click on the INBOX folder of one of those accounts
3) Click on a message in the message list pane.
4) Now disconnect your mouse.
5) Now try to navigate to the other INBOX, using only your keyboard.

As I said before, step 5) is difficult and error prone, because it requires pressing awkward key combinations, and the success of this operation depends on where the keyboard focus is on every pane.

So, for the sake of keyboard users, please implement this simple feature :-)
Comment 3 André Klapper 2008-11-03 22:43:42 UTC
Focus the folder pane (once or twice F6), then type the name of the folder. If there's more folders with the same name, use the up and down keys on the keyboard.
No mouse needed.

I don't think that a "Go to" window would make this easier as it currently is?
Comment 4 André Klapper 2008-11-03 22:45:11 UTC
"awkward key combinations"?!?!
F6 and up and down keys aren't key combinations AT ALL! :-)
Comment 5 Ricardo Correia 2008-11-03 23:28:17 UTC
Ok, if you don't want to implement this feature, then please tell me how to remap F6 to a more convenient key or key combination.

I'm sorry, but I don't think the F6 key is convenient at all, and I suspect you would realize this if you wanted to use Evolution all day without using your mouse.

I just find it's almost impossible to press the F6 key a hundred times per day without looking at the keyboard and without making a single mistake.
Comment 6 André Klapper 2008-11-04 00:01:04 UTC
So F6 is harder to push than something like Ctrl+Shift+G or something like that? ;-)
Propose a shortcut that's not taken already. Will be hard...

(F6 is a GNOME wide setting, so this part is not an Evolution bug.)

Editing the ui.xml files might work to remove Evo specific shortcuts, but I don't know where F6 is defined and whether it's possible to easily change...

Anyway, this is a duplicate of bug 263592, but I don't know of somebody working on this.
