GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 548714
Mouse pointer selection has been removed from Mouse dialog, resulting in confusion
Last modified: 2008-08-21 19:06:08 UTC
The mouse pointer selection tab has been removed from the mouse dialog, resulting in user confusion. I found this when updating to Ubuntu 8.04.1. The current method of selecting the pointer is through theme-setting dialogs, which is extremely obscure and confusing to users who have used earlier versions and even more difficult for new users. I suggest the pointer tab be restored to the mouse dialog. One comment I have is that users are likely to change pointers more often than themes. Also, one associates pointers with the mouse, so it is logical to do this the 'old way', in the mouse dialog. Other information: I submitted a bug report on this to Ubuntu's Launchpad system. The URL for that is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/259195 I tried to do a brief usability survey among some people at a LUG meeting, and it was generally found to be difficult to figure out how to change the mouse pointer. This included an experienced RedHat employee who had to be shown how to change the pointer on his laptop, running a recent Fedora with the same version of Gnome.
Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 537128 ***
