GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 514700
Abbreviations in error dialogs make them unusable
Last modified: 2008-02-08 11:24:16 UTC
Please describe the problem: When copying files (and presumably under other circumstances), the error dialog abbreviates the filename, making the error message almost useless. The user has great difficulty in finding which file the message refers to. For example: Error "Invalid parameters" while copying "/home/rls/m...l Pier.mp3". Steps to reproduce: Copy a file that results in an error (e.g. moving a file between filesystems where the filename contains a non-valid character in the target filesystem). Actual results: Unusuable error dialog Expected results: A more helpful error dialog? Does this happen every time? Yes Other information: This could be easily fixed with a (details...) button, a scrollable error display, etc. At a minimum the length at which abbreviation occurs should be increased.
