Description johnston 2001-09-10 00:58:59 UTC
Link/shortcut properties dialog should offer some way to change the target of
the link. Whether this be for real links, or shortcuts to applications, it would
be nice to be able to change the target. Also, when you drag an application
launcher from the gnome panel, it should make a copy of the launcher, not a link
to the launcher. Dragging onto the desktop feels more like a copy than a link,
so, its a pain in the butt to not be able to adjust the target of the launcher,
since it seems that what's on the desktop isnt actually a launcher, but just a
link.

Amending subject to so that it's more useful.

Also, since a bug report exists to handle a single bug, anything beyond the
issue defined in the subject will probably not be investigated. You may wish to
file a separate bug for your other issue, preferably using the Nautilus Bug
Reporting Assistant.

I'm not sure if changing a symbolic link's target is a sensible unix operation.
In any case, deferring this feature request as it definitely won't be done
before 1.0.

Changing to "old" target milestone for all bugs laying around with no milestone set.
Comment 2 John Fleck 2002-01-26 04:15:22 UTC
Adding GNOME2 keyword.

Proposed patch (against HEAD), UI part.

This patch is for the GUI part (the properties window). The changes should be
applied in apply_link_field_changes, but this isn't trivial. I'll open a new
bug report.

I would like to change the link from absolute path to relative path, which is possible when this bug is resolved.

Review of attachment 48902 [details] [review]:

A lot has changed since this bug was originally reported and the patch above was created.

We no longer have a desktop by default. We no longer show the option to create symlinks by default (but this is configurable!). We no longer try to be an application launcher. And we are about to introduce "favorite files" as a more approachable replacement for symlinks in the desktop.

It's probably not worth the trouble reviewing the patch itself. The code has changed and a new UI would need to be designed with new HIG in mind anyway.

As we are moving to GitLab soon, so, on Carlos's request, I'm tying up this loose end in Bugzilla.
