GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 356922
Possibility to have different icons in different workspaces
Last modified: 2018-01-02 18:46:50 UTC
Hi! I've been using different workspaces since I installed aiglx/compiz. I use different workspaces for different kinds of apps, then wouldn't it be nice to have different icons in the Desktops of different workspaces?. I mean something like putting a file/folder on your desktop, right click on it->"Make this file unique to this desktop". Thanks for the great job!
I want that to :)

It would be a great idea, I think that most of the users would use it.
There are several threads on the Ubuntu forums where new gnome users are looking for this capability. I think it would be a great addition to nautilus. Here is a link to a you tube video that demonstrates this capability as a proof of concept. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGXYLdZEf2c
This will be perfect!
There a suggestion of this in Ubuntu Brainstorm: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/901/
My mom asked why this isn't possible to have separate files on all virtual desktops. One would go for school, the other for home and one for university. IMHO by default all desktops are filled of ~/Desktop , but when explicitly set then files from ~/Whatever would be shown for different workspaces. Also, this setting should survive changing workspaces number to 1 and back to previous.

Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
