Description Sven J. 2006-02-15 13:47:55 UTC
Hello!

I suggest that the "Arrange Items"-item is not removed in list view, there is no
good reason for doing that.
Sure, showing this is somewhat redundant to sort by clicking on a lists headline
- but this is not a pain. It is helpfull.

For example,
perhaps you decided to remove the date-column but now you want to sort by date.
Using the "Arrange Items"-menu is faster than adding the column, scale the
column to fit the window good... and perhaps removing it minutes later again.

Other information:
Adding the "Visible Columns" line in icon view makes sence then, just disable it
and view it grey. Result would be a harmonized menu, easier to work with.

I still think, beside the context menu item sort by, the sort by item should be in the view menu from the menu bar.

I agree with this suggestion. There's no reason to remove the menu item. (Indeed, I think the HIG recommends that menus shouldn't be added and removed.)

As the reporter indicates, there is *some* overlap of functionality between Arrange By and column headers. Overlap isn't necessariy bad though (and is less bad that a dynamic and potentially confusing interface), and the menu does provide some functionality not provided by list columns.
