Description Ali Akcaagac 2005-07-23 16:37:01 UTC
I have some usability issues to report about Rhythmbox. I know this is getting a
bit hard to explain specially because I got used to amaroK (KDE) for quite some
while now.

But under Rhythmbox there is absolutely no information presented for the user.

It's not showing whether it was successfully connecting to the iradio station,
not showing whether it failed connecting there, whether it's playing the stream
until you hear something, it's not even showing any radio station information
WHAT's being played.

amaroK for KDE has the ability to show what's being playd, which author, what
genere, whatever since these kind of information is being sent through the
stream as well. It's able to tell me what author is playing through (e.g.
Nectarine Radio Station), what genere it is, what length the currently playing
music has, if it was able to connect to the radio station, whether it failed etc.

This stuff is quite poorly handled in Rhythmbox and makes the entire app look
like some sort of 'frontend' to some commandline tools rather than a full worthy
player that gives us all kind of informations.

See bug #307899 and bug #309708 for patches that fix this.

Thankyou for your constructive criticism. Reading that last paragraph really
made me want to help you.

Hehe, sorry if you feel offended. This wasn't my intend actually but I am quite
a realistic person here. There used to be times where Rhythmbox was quite a
serious and innovative player for GNOME, then there was some time where it
totally stagnated and then amaroK has shown up on stage. In quite a short time
they made it become quite an impressive player. So please excuse that I tend to
compare Rhythmbox vs. amaroK here.

i've never used amaroK but... that i also miss that information while playing radio streams... author, music name, etc.
it used to work on previous RB versions, maybe it's RB maybe it's gstreamer.
Comment 4 James "Doc" Livingston 2006-02-15 13:00:39 UTC
With current versions you get "connecting" and "buffering" in the status bar, with a progress bar. We should display stream info, unless there are bugs (see below).

Luis: Are you using GStreamer 0.10? If so, it is because the gnome-vfs source isn't handling icecast data yet - which is bug 325847.
Comment 5 Luís Ferreira 2006-02-15 13:23:38 UTC
Doc... yeah using gstreamer 0.10.3 on debian sid
Comment 6 Christian Neumair 2006-04-03 11:38:09 UTC
From reading sources/rb-iradio-source.c, I can't find anything like the metadata_cb from rb-audiocd-source.c.
Comment 7 Jonathan Matthew 2006-04-06 11:35:01 UTC
There doesn't need to be anything like that. The stream data is handled in rb-shell-player.c:info_available_cb.

Bug 333657 is now where the work to enable this with GStreamer 0.10 is taking place.
