GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 309758
Location bar filter enhancement, wildcards
Last modified: 2012-09-05 19:24:12 UTC
Please add this small feature to the nautilus address bar. It would be nice if you could enter wildcard characters in the address bar to filter the files displayed in the nautilus browser window. For example, type "/mnt/cdrom/*.jpg' in the address bar to filter the view to only jpg files in this window. This type of filter was possible in the Win 3.1 filemanager, but functionality was removed for explorer. This feature would be helpful to find specific files faster.
I second this.

I recently came across a similar shortcoming in the Windows Explorer where I had to go to the Command Prompt and do a "dir *pattern*" to quickly find the files I was looking for from a long list. Can't we add a Search widget to Nautilus similar to what Apple incorporated within their iTunes application? As GNOME is already designed towards instant-apply I think that a real-time pattern matching widget in Nautilus would be a logical add-on. Over the years Apple seems to have proven that such a Search interface does in fact make sense and that even "computer illiterate" people do understand how to use such kind of functionality.
I vote for this feature.
I'd like something like this too but rather a separate quickfind widget in the toolbar (optional of course) where typing anything will filter the current view (or views as we now have split view)
Amending title and component.
