GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 304719
2 Notification Areas applets seems strange to be possible.
Last modified: 2020-11-06 20:26:43 UTC
It seems very strange that you might be able to add two notification area applets to a panel (or different panels). If you add a second Notification area, then items in the current one do not appear. If they did then there might be some justification for having two notification areas available. Given the current behaviour, it's unclear what the current behavior is. Strangeness includes: 1. Adding a new notification area doesn't show current items in the initial notification areas. 2. It's unclear where new notifications would appear when that occurs (in the first instance, the second instance or both) 3. There's no obvious way of moving/dragging items in one area to another area. I think that some consideration should be given to this (thus the bug report) Things that should be considered in addressing this include: 1. Should two (or more) areas be possible? 2. Should they duplicate functionality (all showing the same items) 3. Should the items they show be unique and if so, how to target a area initially and/or move items from area to area? 4. If only a single area is possible, should the option to add a second area be included in the Add to Panel dialog? That should get the ball rolling on this. ;-]
I think the best way would be to duplicate the notification area. Its the least surprise thingy that everyone talks about with HIG and stuff i forget. So, have one notification area with some things running in it, then when you add a second one it should duplicate, and then behave exactly like the first one. Implementation idea: hide the real ones, put fake ones in boxes and forward input. I don't know whether or not the notification area is actually notified whenever the picture changes though...
See also bug 320848. What could be done, though, is tell the user that there's already one.
According to bug 320848, we can legitimately have 2 notification areas, one on each screen. Right?
